Genre and Narrative Notes

Genre
What is Genre

The term for media texts which are grouped together, they tell similar stories or are comprised of similar elements and are established through repetition and variation. E.g  Science fiction movies are established through repetition and variation. 

   Generic Conventions
The widely recognized way of doing things in a  particular genre

Iconography
Symbolic images in film that have specific meanings attached to them and can be identifiable by genre

Narrative- The way the story is told. The way the film is structured.

Linear/Non Linear
Linear- Beginning, middle, end.
Non Linear-Middle,end,beginning.

Single Stranded/Multi Stranded 
Single Stranded- Story told from one person.

Multi Strand- Story told from the point of view of more than one person.

Open/Closed
Open- The end of the film leaves you unclear /uncertain of what will happen.

Closed- The end of the film will have a clear ending.

Realist/Anti-Realist
Realist-based in the real world is believable and no added visual or unrealistic elements are added

Anti Realist - based in a world that is not seen as 'real' including magic and fantasy element.
